... Answers

  1. What kind of pictures is available in the database?
In the database you will find photographs including aerial views and posters relating to events and/or persons of importance for modern German history from 1860 up to now.
  2. How do I find pictures?
There are several possibilities to find pictures: The "simple search" (the search box at the top of every page), the "Advanced search" by systematic use of different boxes or by "Browsing" via subject, person or locality (topicsearch).
  3. What does »topic search« means?
By browsing via subject, person or locality (=topicsearch) you can find pictures which - when described - were grouped under different subject areas (i.e. "categorized"). There are two classification systems by subject, one system by person, i.e. an index of all persons to whom the Federal Archives keeps pictures, and two geographical classification systems ("Germany" and "Worldwide").
  4. Why do I see in some cases a text, but instead of a picture a note only that the picture cannot be shown?
If the Federal Archives obtains the rights to a still picture in analogue form only, i.e. not for digital use, a dummy is shown. Please, contact us in such a case, send a filled out form "Use for request", inform us about your planned usage, so that we can make the picture available.
  5. What is a light box?
You can collect pictures in a light box. Please, bear in mind that a light box will be stored for weekrs for registered researchers only.
  6. How can I download high-resolution pictures?
After your registration, check and clearing by the Federal Archives, you can download high-resolution pictures as soon as you paid the actual costs.
  7. May I use pictures for non-commercial internet purposes?
Yes, under the precondition that you
    - quote the "Federal Archives" as source,
    - add the signature of the pictures and
    - of name of the originator, i.e. the photographer.
It's not allowed to use photos of the Bundespresseamt (Federal Press- and Information Office) for free
    !
You also can use fotos from the Federal Archives for free on Wikimedia Commons
    http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Bundesarchiv
  8. Why should I register?
You may search without registration. For downloading of reproducible pictures registration and information on person-related data are compulsory in order to enable the start of the automated payment procedure.
  9. How can I register?
You will register by five (creditcard) or six (Advanced Payment / Prepayment) steps:
    1. You agree to the "Conditions for the use of still pictures archives".
    2. You provide the Federal Archives with a user name and a pass-word.
    3. You provide us with your data and the method of payment you prefer.
    4. Activation of your researcher’s account by confirming the link of activation we shall send to you by e-mail.
    5. ONLY AT MODE "ADVANCED PAYMENT" and "DIRECT DEBIT": Fill out, sign the use application sent by e-mail to you and sending the application to the Federal Archive,
    6. Check of your registration by the Federal Archives and, if okay, clearance.
  10. How much time will clearance take after registration?
The check will normally not need more than one labour day (at mode "ADVANCED PAYMENT" and "DIRECT DEBIT": after we receive the application form!).
  11. What do I do, if I did not find any pictures of relevance to me?
Check whether you can find relevant information by using other search words, in particular in cases of research by subject. If you did not succeed despite of these additional options, please, contact the Federal Archives by phone, e-mail or mail. You will find our address data in the box "Contact".
  12. Which costs are to be covered in case of use?
The amount of fees depends on the purpose of use, e.g. the scale of a publication. The costs of the Federal Archives can be seen in the "Bundesarchiv-Kostenverordnung" (only available in german language); the costs of the Federal Press- and Information Office list all fees and other payable expenses.
  13. How may I contact you?
You may contact us by phone or in writing. Our address and phone number are available on the page "Contact".
  14. Which are the meaning of abbreviations used in the texts of description of the pictures?

  15. I have additions for a picture description. What can I do?
The Federal Archive describes pictures - where available - with the original text. If no original text is available, the picture is described by the archivists of the Federal Archive. In view of the large number of pictures, of course it can come to discrepancies in individual cases. We are always grateful for notes and additions because of this.
